2024 Disability Awareness Days: Mark Your Calendars

As a company serving the disabled community with our comprehensive software for IDD agencies, VertexSystems is dedicated to standing alongside those with disabilities, their families, and the organizations that support them. We believe one of the most important ways to do this is by raising awareness of the days that celebrate individuals with disabilities.

To this end, we’d like to draw your attention to several upcoming disability awareness days in 2024. These days celebrate and shed light on different aspects of disability. From rare disorders  to the challenges faced by those with visual impairments. Each day provides an opportunity to learn more about disabilities and recognize the contributions of individuals with disabilities in the community.

Disability Pride Month

First and foremost, we’d like to recognize Disability Pride Month, celebrated every July. This month aims to acknowledge and value those with disabilities and their intersecting identities, by honoring their history, achievements, struggles, and experiences. It is a time for individuals living with disabilities and their families to share and express what it means to live with a disability and how it impacts one’s life.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Next, we’d like to highlight Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), observed on the third Thursday of May each year. Launched in 2012, this day promotes digital accessibility for those with disabilities and advocates for inclusive design development. The GAAD Foundation, created in 2021 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of GAAD, supports the holiday. On this day, individuals and organizations worldwide hold events, webinars, and workshops to educate and inspire others to make their digital platforms accessible to all.

Learning Disability Week

Every June, millions come together to celebrate Learning Disability Week on an international scale. This occasion serves as a platform to highlight the remarkable achievements, talents, and contributions of individuals with learning disabilities while simultaneously debunking misconceptions about their capabilities. Moreover, this week serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering an inclusive society that values and supports individuals with learning disabilities, empowering them to reach their full potential.

World Autism Month and Autism Awareness Day

Observed every April, World Autism Month is a significant period for recognizing and advocating for people with Autism and their families. Supported by the renowned organization Autism Speaks, the month-long observance is designed to share stories, improve public understanding of Autism, and promote acceptance and global support for the cause. Coinciding with Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, various activities are held to encourage participation, such as following Autism Speaks on social media, submitting personal stories to the organization, and fundraising on social media platforms.

International Guide Dog Day

Celebrated each year on April 24th, International Guide Dog Day coincides with International Pet Month and marks the establishment of the International Federation of Guide Dog Associations. This day recognizes guide dogs and their role in enhancing the lives of those with visual impairments. Guide dogs symbolize independence, companionship, and safety, assisting their owners in navigating their surroundings.

International Day of Sign Languages

The International Day of Sign Languages, celebrated on September 23rd, emphasizes the importance of sign language in the deaf community’s communication. Established by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), which consists of 135 national associations for the deaf, this day recognizes and supports the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of deaf people and sign language users across the world. With around 70 million deaf people globally, the day commemorates the establishment of WFD while underlining the unity and significance that sign language brings to these individuals.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness about Down Syndrome and celebrating the unique abilities and achievements of the community. It’s also a time to advocate for greater inclusion and opportunities for those living with Down Syndrome. Celebrate by getting involved in community events, sharing on social media, and supporting organizations that provide resources and support.
