During IDD Awareness Month, we honored the movements made in improving the quality of life for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Critical laws have been implemented and innovations have been made to help people with developmental disabilities lead impactful, fulfilling lives.

To have a genuine appreciation for the progress, you should understand what those living with an IDD experience in their daily lives.

What is a Developmental Disability?

IDDs affect the course of one’s development – physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Executing daily activities can be complex since various body parts and systems are affected.

The Movements

President Reagan proclaimed March IDD Awareness Month in 1987. This opened the door for society to begin implementing necessary social change.

When the Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, discrimination targeting individuals with disabilities in the workplace became prohibited. Over a decade later, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed in 2004. For individuals with developmental disabilities, this guaranteed access to early intervention, special education, and services to help high schoolers transition into adulthood.

Today, the world continues to work towards a reality where opportunities to reach success are accessible to all.
